Superlatives are not enough to describe the beauty of Les Baux. Explore the cobbled streets lined with historic old houses, many of them filled with artists’ workshops, galleries and shops offering local products. Climb the steep streets filled with dappled sunshine, then rest in the shade of a centuries-old fig tree or stop at a café for a drink.
At the top of Les Baux de Provence you will find the remains of the fortress, with its breath-taking, panoramic views. The site has informative signage and paintings, including life-sized replicas of historic weapons. Cross the battlements where the mistral blows and gaze out over the surrounding countryside, 200 meters below. Smell the scents of rosemary and thyme in the air, wafting you back in time.
As you leave Les Baux de Provence, pay a visit to the Carrieres de Lumiere, just 100 meters from the public car park. These tall and impressive old quarries house in their depths an exhibition of extraordinary paintings. These are projected on the walls in a spectacular sound and light show. In midsummer, when the sun outside burns relentlessly, the coolness of the quarries offer a welcome respite from the heat.
